Purpose of this assignment

To develop awareness of the different kinds of strategy, which could be used in operational, tactical or strategic role for an organisation. Students will learn different theories, models and concepts and directions. This assignment will help them develop sufficient knowledge and understanding of strategy to make a positive, efficient and effective contribution to the development of business plans and operational direction by having specific input into an organisation decision-making and planning.

You have been recruited as a Corporate Strategy Manager by a well-known large global organisation [An organisation of your choice. Working students can use their own place of work, if appropriate]. You have been asked to produce an environmental analysis and strategic growth management plan based on the use of recognised internal and external analytical tools.

Part A:

You are to complete an internal and external analysis that provides a basis for strategic planning:

· Analysis will include a PEST/LE and SWOT analysis of the organisation and an analysis of the organisation’s capabilities.

· Analysis of the competitive environment using Porter’s Five Forces model.

Part B:

Devise a strategic plan based on the environmental analysis and findings:

· Evaluation of the different types of strategic directions available to the organisation.

· Justify and recommend the most appropriate growth platform and strategies.

· Produce a strategic management plan with strategies, objectives and tactics.

Submission Format for Task 1:

The submission is in the form of a strategic management plan report. This should be written in a concise, formal business style. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit is 3,000–3,500 words, although you will not be penalised for exceeding the total word limit.
