Case Study Report Instructions

This is a single case study report. Please follow carefully the instructions below:

The aim of the case report is to identify any issues relating to a chronic disorder and health psychology interventions. You must engage critically with and evaluate the role of health psychologists in the management of a chronic disorder.  You may assume that the health professional already knows the patient and has a full medical history.

Remember: A case study is an in-depth analysis of a single person.  Therefore, make sure to critically analyse and evaluate the case study below. Support with evidence throughout the report.

Write a single case study report in response to this case study:

Daniela, a 26 year old single unemployed woman was diagnosed with cervical cancer a couple of years ago. She reported irregular menstrual cycle for 9 months leading up to the diagnosis. She had noticed increased bleeding, abdominal pain and poor appetite. She has been receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment since. She describes her desperation for pain relief as follows:  “I am willing to have my bottom cut off if it can take my pain away”. Emily had her menarche at the age of 12 and has been pregnant 6 times and has five daughters and the oldest is aged 10 years. She reports that 2 grandparents and an aunt had cancer but she is unsure of the type of cancer. Her mother, sister and aunt have hypertension and diabetes. She smokes approximately 2 packs of cigarettes per week and drinks 3 beers a day.

You must use the following format/structure:

  1. Background case history: details such as age, gender, work, health status, family and social relationships etc.
  2. Analysis of the presenting problem: contributing factors to causes and development of the problem, likely consequences and outcomes of the situation. Links should be made to theory and research.
  3. Recommendations: will focus on a plan used to progress to positive outcome, aims and objectives, people who might need to be involved and evaluation of outcomes.

Please note that sections 2 and 3 above should considerably be longer than 1.

Therefore, the case report must evaluate psychological models and theoretical concepts in the prevention and treatment of a chronic disorder. You must identify any problems or difficulties that may arise and make recommendations for best treatment practice within the context of the case study.  The case study report must identify a minimum of 3 health psychology interventions.

You are not required to ‘diagnose’ or ‘assess’ the characters in the case study.  They are just tools to facilitate discussion on theoretical issues. It is important that you structure the case report so that it focuses on the person and that theory and evidence is purely used to discuss the case.

Please ensure that the report includes references to relevant literature.

You must consider the following when writing:

  • Use of appropriate material to provide a detailed and comprehensive answer to the question.
  • Evidence of sound knowledge of core Health Psychology theory and research, including mainly recent and/or non-core and/or wide-ranging material.
  • Evidence of good ability to relate Health Psychology material to information about related disciplines.
  • Sound evaluation of theory and research.
  • Material clearly organized in a sensible, logical way.
  • Good academic writing style with generally appropriate use of language and comprehensible, grammatical expression of ideas.

Do not forget to proof-read and to use APA referencing throughout the report. Also, make sure you use UK English grammar and NOT US English grammar e.g. “behaviour” and NOT “behavior”
