Brooks Context:

When I was active duty, I had the luxury of predicting my deployment to South Korea.  That is, in my field, a “remote” to Korea was almost inevitable.  So, when it happened, the shock was slightly mitigated by conditioning.

For me, leaving—the actual departure—was the toughest.  But when I returned, I found that my wife, with whom I left 4 young children, had adapted well to being a single mother.  She adapted so well, there were times when I felt almost obsolete.

But just as we had both adjusted to new paradigms (the separation), we worked together to create a new paradigm.

Now, it is not unusual for military members to have multiple lengthy deployments.  As you proceed with these Discussion Board topics, consider the concomitant issues.
