Primary and Secondary

Research consists of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are preferred, “A primary source is an original document containing firsthand information about a topic” (Simon, 2005, p. 17). Secondary sources interpret primary sources, “A secondary source contains commentary on, or discussion about, a primary source” (Simon, 2005, p.17). Using studies or primary data obtained by others becomes secondary data when someone else uses it. Secondary sources may present biased information or have a different purpose. Other considerations for selecting secondary sources are the time frame when it was done (Simon, 2005). Information may become obsolete with the passage of time.
