Discuss the characteristics of ‘Academic English’.

Introduction
You can begin by making a general statement about your learning this session and the importance of reflection. You may want to include a definition of reflection or reflective writing from unit content. You also need to introduce the focus of this report and what is included in the report (thesis statement or purpose) – list your learning needs in the order that they appear in your report. Inform the reader that your learning plan, which this report is based on, is located in the Appendix. Write in the present tense.
Example:
A learning plan contributes to establishing a clear learning structure. A combination of a learning plan and reflection can result in greater progress towards meeting identified goals. This report aims to provide a self–evaluation of my learning development and experience in my first session of study at university. There are four learning goals that are reviewed in this report and they are improving my time management, academic writing, referencing, and developing a growth mindset. Strategies and resources are outlined; my main barriers are identified; and an evaluation of outcomes and reflection are provided. This report also includes a discussion of the academic skills required in my discipline of study, namely Business.
Improve my Time Management
Discuss the importance of time management and what you have learnt about it in this unit (e.g. Covey’s reading will assist you here – listed as Habit 3 Put First Things First: Principles of Personal Management located in MyReadings). Summarise your strategies, resources, and barriers. Reflect on the outcomes and what you learnt as per your learning plan. Make sure you relate it to unit content through relevant readings (e.g. Covey), the lecture slides and Study Guide Topic 2. There is also an SCU Quick Guide on time management.
3. Improve my Academic Writing
Discuss the characteristics of ‘Academic English’. The references by Turner et al (2011) (Chapter 8: Doing case studies and writing reports – this was emailed to you due to Copyright reasons) and ‘Chapter 13: Learning journals and reflective writing’ by Creme & Lea (2008) are two useful references along with the four readings you completed for Assessment 2, relevant Study Guides, SCU Quick Guides, and Lecture slides/notes. Summarise your main strategies, and learning barriers. How did you overcome your barriers? Reflect on your progress and success.
Learn to Reference in Harvard
Include a description of what referencing is (Harvard) and why it is important (e.g. Academic Integrity, acknowledging others’ work). Summarise your strategies, resources, and barriers. Reflect on the outcomes and what you learnt as per your learning plan. Make sure you relate it to unit content through the lecture slides and Study Guide in Week 4 and there is also an SCU Quick Guide on referencing.
Develop a Growth Mindset
Begin by describing a Growth Mindset and why it is important to your learning. Relate to unit content through the readings by Dweck (2010); Chapter 1: Thinking about Learning – Turner et al. (2011) (copy emailed to you); Chapter 1: You and the University – Zeegers et al. (2011); Study Guide Topic 2; lecture PowerPoint slide; and your lecture notes. Summarise your strategies and barriers and discuss how you overcame your barriers. Reflect on your progress towards meeting your goals and what you have learnt.
Academic Skills Required in Business
What are the academic skills that you have learnt in this unit that will assist you in your future studies and career? Why? Relate to unit content. You could use the reference by Turner et al. (2011) on “Doing case studies and written report”. The Study Guides and the notes you have taken from lectures and readings will assist you.
Conclusion
Summarise your main points. Do not introduce any new information.
Recommendations
Discuss what you now need to do to improve your learning needs so that you can be a successful university student and to assist you in your career once you finish university. Provide specific recommendations of what you can do to improve these skills based upon your reflection on your learning plan and your progress towards your goals.
Total: 1700 words (between 1530-1870 words), excluding references, and appendix.
References
These are listed on a separate page in EITHER APA 6th edition OR Harvard. Whichever referencing style you choose, make sure that you are consistent. If you are using APA, double space each source and use a hanging indent. Only include the sources you have referenced in-text, including a minimum of four (4) sources from MyReadings as well as lecture slides, Study Guides, SCU Quick Guides, and your lecture notes.
Appendix: Final Learning Plan
Your final Learning Plan, which includes two different coloured fonts and the final column (Evaluation of Outcomes and Reflection), needs to be more than just a description of what you did. You need to reflect on your progress and achievements: What did you learn? How do you feel? Did you meet your goals? Why or why not? Do you need to do anything differently now? If yes, what do you now need to do to achieve your goals? You can use these reflections in your recommendations in your report.
