Project Reflection

This project aimed to persuade the members of the council to vote against the pink water bottle company using a number of strategies. To finish this project, there are two parts outlined: The first part involves the general explanation of the reasons why the company should not be set up in that region. It was easy to stipulate these reasons because the aim was to make the members of the council nostalgic about how the community has been prior to the establishment of the company. It was easy to remind them that establishing a mining company would have adverse effects on the community.

The second part included the incorporation of social media posters with captions that demonstrate how mining can affect the community. The task here was to use the pictures to stress on the seriousness of the matter on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Social media activism is a tool Velasquez and LaRose (2015) define as a game change for social issues in the next few years. By showing how the community will end up through pictures, it would be easier for the members of the council to get a clear picture of the possible outcomes. However, the pictures alone would not be enough to demonstrate the outcome. A clear explanation to accompany the pictures would enable the council to understand. Each post had a different caption, that way, it would be easy for readers on all platforms to emerge into the matter, understand, and share the knowledge with other users.

What I liked most about this project is that it is something that I can relate to and one that affects everyone in the community. It enabled me to understand that although community developmental projects are good, they can have severe consequences and this is one of them (Prno, Pickard, & Kaiyogana, 2021). The ability to explain to the council members of these consequences demonstrates that I have the interest of the community at heart and I can do something to contribute to the wellbeing of the community. I am confident that the social media posters and the caption will enable the council members grasp the importance of this issue. I found it important to find posters that have a clear message within them in order to persuade the council members. Even so, I indicated the rationale behind the accompanying message because these pictures can be interpreted differently by social media users but at the same time, I think that the posters had a clear message.

Although the project was quite simple, I encountered some difficulties. First, the time constraint was an issue. I overcame this problem by following De Reyck and Herroelen (1999) advice on scheduling each task and allocating a timeframe. Another challenge was explaining the disadvantages that come with setting up a developmental project in a rural area despite all the benefits it could have for the people within the community. A widely known benefit is that it creates employment opportunities for the community members and can implement corporate social responsibility that will help them immensely. I had to ensure that the disadvantages would outweigh the advantages which was quite difficult to do. The time estimation and management of the project was as planned. Each task was completed within the set timeframe and the project was completed on time.
